Show state stale equalization on monday we intimated that thattie the salt lake tribune manifested a degree of ignorance not justifiable in a paper of its standing and T tuesdays issue denies the ignorance but offers t the proof in the article itself the last legislature fixed the rate of taxation for state purposes at 5 mills on the dollar and for state stale schools 3 mills cotal 8 millis so the state board has haa no other way to meet the current expenses except to get valuations high enough at the 5 mill rate to raise the sum of exclusive of the expenses of collecting Z it we would also be glad if the tribune ne would name some prominent and reliable attorney who holds that there can be levied an 8 mill rate for state purposes and not include the 3 mill rate for schools we believe that some of the members of the ibe constitutional convention had that idea but salt gait lake county would reject that theory stronger than they would a raise we do not know that a raise of valuations may be necessary but if if it shall be we think that it should be done fairly and if salt lake county on all classes of property is assessed as in the same proportion to its value as aa other othe r counties it must then come up as other counties we would not like to see the state run in debt the first year of its existence even if some of salt lakes property has to be assessed a higher than it is now we do not believe that either salt lake county or any other county in in the state is assessed at its full cash value for instance take the statements of the banks of the state of cash on hand band and the amount of cash as assessed take the merchandise as reported by the statisticians and that of the assessor cattle horses sheep etc the same la Is there any one who believes our state to be worth less jess thin than twice the assessed ed value |
