Show KILLS ONE, WOUNDS FIVE IN ENCOUNTER By Universal Service. MEMPHIS, Tenn., June 13. After having hav-ing killed one policeman and wounded five others In a pistol fight following his arrest for stealing chickens. Lorenzo Young, a negro, tenlght is riding across the state to the penitentiary with a bullet wound in his stomach which, the doctors say, will mean his death before morning. Young wounded five policemen and killed the sixth. Sergeant John Lrinkley, when police pursued him. He was cap. tured after he had been wounded three times. l'olioe officers evaded a Memphis mob and placed the negro on a train for Nashville. Nash-ville. He was taken off at Jackson, Tenn., by officers. However, tho Madison county coun-ty sheriff refused to allow him to be jailed. Two other mobs were evaded at Somerville and Whlteville, where friends of the dead policeman attempted to avenge his deatlj. Leaving Jackson in an automobile, they attempted the 1100-mile run lo Nashville, where the negro is to be kept until the trial. |
