Show ! PRODUCERS OF ZINC BEGIflJIPEraN Smelters and Operators Work for Best Interests of Industry. American zinc industry has finally gotten got-ten together, according to the Boston News Bureau. No longer does producer fight smelter, and smelter fight producer. They are working together for the advancement ad-vancement of the industry as a whole. This means in future the industry will direct its energies toward extending uses of the metal. Zinc is not only low in price but also one of the most "widely occurring occur-ring commoner metals. Conseauently no shortage will result, greatly to advantage advan-tage of both consumer and producer, as well as of the cation as a whole. As early as 1909 European producers were affiliated in two syndicates. These groups worked closely together, Prior to that gentlemen's agreements had prevented pre-vented much cutthroat competition. It took the biggest war in history to make American zinc industry realize foolish -ness of Jealousy and suspicion that had characterised it. Necessity of discovering discover-ing substitutes for tin and other metals, because of war shortage, compelled much research by war industries board. This resulted in finding of many new uses for zinc. War work had thrown zinc smelters and producers Into close contact. Consequently, Con-sequently, when research work began to make zinc producers realize how little i hoy had appreciated possibilities of t he metal they were exploiting, they decided to organise. American Zinc Institute was formed. Its objects are to unify industry, indus-try, to compile statisties covering domestic and foreign zinc production and consumption, con-sumption, and to further research v, ork in new uss and possibilities. Already larger mining companies and all hut one fcinelting company are represented by members in the institute. At nrcsent producers, smeltTs and interested third parties are ecjually numerous in its mem- ; berships. Institute's aims can riehtly be j considered tndica t ive of industry as a ; whole, and not of any clique. Co-operation tho institute has brought about is real and substantial. Already George C. Store, previously connected with Now Jerst-y Zinc company and war Industries Indus-tries board, is on his way to Huron' to represent American Zinc Institute. There he will study noMwnr conditions from .-tandpoint of both producer and smelter eo t lie institute, and the industry can plan tut ure u ork with better understanding and grasp. That producers oted unanimously as did smelter to pond the bctt man upon this important mission, no matter if be was affiliated v !th smelting rather than wir'i mining lnl-rests. tignifn-Hnt. That producers and smellers are -a hoMiear ted -;y financing rest-arch and educational work of the in-titutc augurs well. In view of the suspicion and erretive- nesa that formerly characterized the zinc I industry, the best indication of the cbar-l cbar-l acter of co-operation is that producers and : snir-lterb a'-e .-oi 'lirg M;iti inn 1 informa-! informa-! tn-n to and pl:i--in- th'-ir knowledge mid ! experience ('reel;,- at the di.poil of the institute.
