Show 1SS81 IB ilHBEBO Moberly Scene of Summary Punishment of Accused Black Man. MOBERLT, Mo.. Nov. 1C. A negro.-one negro.-one of four said to have robbed Edward Thompson, a former soldier. Thursday night, was lynched here today by a mob of loO masked men. The negro's companions, com-panions, who had been taken from the jail at Macon early today and spirited here, escaped, but later it was reported two had been captured and incarcerated at a point unknown to the mob. Keeling against 'he negroes Is running high and It v. as reported farmers have gone to adjacent counties in search of the recaptured blacks. Local authorities aald the negroes admitted they were J. w. w. Fearing moh violence. Sheriff Owens last night took the iiuartet to Macon county. Hearing of this a mob motored there and demanded that .Sheriff Jesstem-per Jesstem-per turn over the negroes to them. The sheriff pleaded with the men, but the Jail keys were taken forcibly from him, and the blacks were returned hero Just before davbreak, clad onlv in their nlghtolothes. A large fire had been built in a public park, and on seeing this the negroes set up howls. A rope was placed over tne head of one and swung over a limb of a tree. The mob pulled and the limb broke. The negro ne-gro started running, but stumbled and fell. Four guns flashed and he was killed instantly. in-stantly. At the sound of the shots, the other three ran. The negroes are alleged to have beaten Thompson into unconsciousness and robbed him of 512 on the outskirts of Moberly. |
