Show DOPE UPSET 1 SErpiEi NEWPORT, R. I., Aug. 4. The surprises sur-prises of the first-round matches in the invitation lawn tennis tournament at the Casino todav were- the defeat of Vincent Vin-cent Richard's of New York, one o the national doubles champions, by Clarence J. Griffin of Sun. Francisco in four sets, and the difficulty which William M. Johnston of San Francisco, former national na-tional champion, had in disposing of J. W. Foster of Boston. Griffin's playing was like clockwork. He was perfect, both in the back court and at the net, while Richards was not up to top form. Although Johnston won in straight sets, two of these went to extra games and there were fifteen deuce games. The California Cali-fornia star was in good form, but Foster showed unexpected strength. The Australian players. Patterson, Lycett, Thomas and Brookes, are expected ex-pected to arrive in time to play tomorrow. tomor-row. Robert Kinev. S:in Francisco, defeated Crnlg Diddle.
