In recognition of his twenty-five years of service in the national guard of Utah, a silver medal was presented yesterday in behalf of the state to Maior H. M. II. Lund, chief quartermaster quarter-master of the state troops and United States property and disbursing officer for Utah. The presentation was made bv djutant General Fred Jorgensen. "The'medal bears the seal or the state and is inscribed with the words , lor faithful and honest service. On the silver bar. from which the medal is susi ended bv a red. white and blue ribbon', is euerraved the words, "Twenty-five years.' . ' Major Lund is the oldest national euard officer in point of service in the state From the organization ot the first military unit in 1S94 he has oeen an active member. For two years previous to the lorma-tion lorma-tion of the 'state guard Major Lund was captain of the Norden military com panv. which he organized. Members of the "company bought their own uniforms and equipment. The Norden company, combined with the Denhalter Kitles was the basis of the present national guard When taken into state service the Norden company became B company com-pany of the national organization and the Penhalter Rifles were known as A company. Maior Lund was made a captain" in the new state unit. In 11S he was promoted to be a major. ma-jor. His next advancement brought his rank to Lieutenant Colonel on the brigade bri-gade staff. He served on the staff as inspector general and paymaster. Mior;-v Mior;-v at'ierwards he was appointed assistant assis-tant adjutant general on the brigade staff with the rank of lieuteuant colonel. col-onel. He was elected lvutenant colonel in command of the First regiment of infantry in 1904. During the same year he was elected colonel of the regiment. regi-ment. This promotion made him acting brigade commander, placing him in loharge of the signal corps, a regiment (of infantry, a troop of cavalry and a 1 battery of artillery. , Major l.uud was appointed in 190o I assistant adjutant general on the staff j of tho governor. This office he held I until its abolition by the last regular ; session of the legislature. He was appointed United Stales property prop-erty and disbursing officer by tho soc- ' rotarv of war in 1916. i , |
