Show BILL ESSICK'S CLUB TO BE STRONG ONE Bill Essick yesterday received a letter from his new portsider, Sam Ross. The new adjunct to the Tigers is still In the service at Parker Hill, Boston. He told Essick that ho was desirous of playing on tho coast and that he had applied for his discharge, but did not know just when he would get it. Ross pitched in , the Southern league last year and did good work. Essick yesterday received a signed contract from his crack catcher, Al DeVormer. The backstop writes that ho Is In fine shape and that he wintered well In Grand Rapids, Mich. DeVormer stated that he would be on hand March 10 to start in practice at Maier, park. DeVormer's fine work last year with the Tigers made him a prime favorite with the followers of that club. WaLler Boles, regarded by many as the brainiest backstop In the Pacific Coast league, will start in to do light work at "Washington park beginning next Monday. For a few days "Walter expects to do nothfng but toss the ball. He expects ex-pects to be in fair condition when the practice season begins, March 10. Johnny Rawllngs, shortstop of the Boston Bos-ton Braves, has not yet sent in his signed contract, but expects to do so in a few days. He has been working here all winter win-ter and is in good shape. He expects to be in Boston about March 19. Should Babe Borton come back to the Tigers in good shape, Bill Essick is going go-ing to be put to it as to just where he can squeeze in Bobby Meusel. Borton, when right, is a mighty sweet first Backer Back-er and a consistent .oOO hitter. He has had a long experience around the Initial sack and knows all the finer angles of the game. It would be an easy matter to place Bobby Meusel in the field if Pete Daley does' n't return to the fold. Pete, however, is almost certain to Bay, "I want in," before many days have i elapsed. Daley is-one of the foxiest gar- j deners in the leaguo and a big .Vernon asset. Therefore if Daley signs up, j where, oh where, wiU Essick put Bobby, with Chadbourne in center and Tommy Dong in right? Leave it to Bill.- Los Angeles Times. |
