Batterymen Complimented for Fine Demeanor on I Long Hike. By FLOYD A. TlM MERMAN, Staff Correspondent. WITH THE UTAH REGIMENT IN THE FIELD, OCEANSIDE, Cal., May Stepping along at the average rate of four mile3 an hour, the Utah boys reached ' Oceanside shortly befor 2 o'clock this afternoon and pitched their top tents on the sandy beach within a few yards of the ocean. When the soldiers piled from their beds at u o'clock this morning, they carried the impression that the foutteen-mlle hike was before them. They were pleasantly pleas-antly surprised. however, when they found that the distance was but twelve miles, and they marched through the town two hours before schedule. Due to the pood marching' lime made this morning', morn-ing', the artillerymen were allowed a two- , hour rest at noon and an opportunity to plunge into the cool ocean waves. They took advantage of the swim to a man, and the beach was dotted with the baih-era baih-era In a surprisingly nhort space of time. Town people of Oea nside turned out to welcome the dusty but happy soldiers, and lined the streets waving flafcs and cheering. They followed the men to the campiru? place on the beach, and watched with interest the establishment of camp. The manner in which they Rreeted the artillerymen gave evidence of ome Rood times in town tonight. That the men are upholding the cood reputation of the Utah regiment during the present hike, has been made evident by letters received by Colonel Webb from committees in towns which ha ve been 1 visited, cornplimenting the command upon I its cleanliness about the camping grounds and the behavior of the Utath Holder A letter received today from the Knr-nitas Knr-nitas Improvement association, where a htop was ma.de yesterday, r-om oilmen I s , tho men in the following manner: j Men Are Complimented. j Jt, gives me great, pleasure to write j TTHi'in behalf of the people- of Unci- 1 nitau regarding the rondlt ion of tho t amping ground, which u as left in ftplendid shape by your men.
