Show JAMES S. CLARKSON N DIES IN NEW JERSEY Former Iowa Editor and Political Leader Succumbs at Ago of 76 Yeai'3. NEWARK, X. May 31. James S. ( larkson. for man;. yenrs a member of the republicnn national executive committee, com-mittee, died hero today. Ho was 7b' years old. Mr. Clarkson was born in BrooKville, lnd., and during the civil war operated in lfcva stations of the "underground railway " which aided southern slaves 13 escape to Canada. After the war Mr. Clarksou became editor in chief and coproprietor of the Iowa State .Register. Dcs Moines, and in 1869-71 was chairman of the Iowa Republican stale committee. He was first assistant postmaster general in Mr. Clarksou also had a prominent business career, lie organized and was president of tbe companies which built the Chicago, Burlington & Qnincv (187-1) and Wabash railways into Pes" Moines ami also of tho Dcs Moines Northern and Jes Moines Northwestern railwavs i 1882 and 1881. trosvenor Clarkson, a son, is secre-l''"'J- of the council of national defense. |
