Show Sergio Alvarez, 138 pound junior, jun-ior, will hold down the other forward for-ward berth. Sergio saw some action last year as a regular. He has a good eye for the basket and with Jensen and Callen will make Bingham's scoring attack hard to stop. Alvarez is remembered remem-bered by supporters of last year's basketball team as the long dis- tance shooter who sparked the Miners for wins in several close games. He is shifty and deceptive, decept-ive, qualities useful in breaking up plays of the opposing teams. On the guard line Coack Warren War-ren Allsop has developed Ernest Sheen and Stanley Long to take the place of Joe Churich and Ely Sasich, last year's regulars who were lost by graduation. Sheen is a senior and tips the scales at 165 pounds, is rugged and takes his guarding duties seriously. Stanley Long, 1C6 pounder, stands six feet and plays a smooth game at his guard post. Both Sheen and Long played football this fall and were second sec-ond stringers of the hoop team in 1939 play. The Miners have a strong string of substitutes in the lineup line-up for this season. In forward berths are Frank Nelson of Lark, who is fast becoming a good scorer and will probably see considerable con-siderable action this year. He is j a junior. Joe Badovinatz will be the other utility forward. This is Joe's last year. Although he is short he makes up for this handicap han-dicap by his aggressive play. Ken Davis, 155 pounder and a junior, is reserve center. Kenneth Reynolds and Johnny Wicks, a newcomer from Meeker, Colo., will see considerable action as utility guards. The last three named na-med are scrappy players, Reynolds Rey-nolds and Davis both being on the football squad this year. Steady improvement has been shown in each practice game. The team dropped their first game to a veteran South Summit (Kamas) team 33-24. They lost to Pleasant Grove 43-38 and defeated de-feated American Fork 43-33. The The locals beat South Summit in a pre-season contest 43-34 on the local floor Wednesday. This afternoon they travel to Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove for their final practice prac-tice game. o Practice Improves B.H.S. Hoopsters The Bingham high school basketball bas-ketball team is fast rounding into in-to shape for their opening league lea-gue game with Grantsville here Friday, December 5. Although there is but one returning re-turning regular, local fans be- lieve they have good reason for expectations of a strong team to represent the Miners when the season gets underway. Frank Callen, 200 pound, six-foot six-foot center, is the sole returning return-ing regular from last year's squad. Proven as a ball hustler and possessor of a good basket eye as demonstrated by the fact that he rated second in Region Two point-getting last season, he is expected to show fans both good offensive and defensive defen-sive play. He is a senior and was captain of Utah's class B football champions. I Gordon Jensen, 135 pound senior sen-ior who plays in the forward position, po-sition, is fast shaping into a scoring scor-ing mate for Callen. Last season he saw action on the second team and has developed into a scrappy fast ball rustler. During football season he played halfback position. |
