Show NEW SLAV NATION. King Nicholas of Montenegro has been deposed by the national assembly, which declared for a union yith Serbia under King Peter. Two or three weeks ago King Nicholas offered to resign in order that the consolidation might bo brought about, but the summary action of the national assembly would seem to indieale that the monarch had changed his mind or that ho was too slow in pignitig his abdication. Ever since the tide of war turned, the union of Sorhia and Montenegro has been considered inevitable, for tho people of the two countries are practically of the same blood and faith and should 'not be under separate. governments. This is also true of the, Croats and Slovenes, who belong to tho same race. At the present time tho magazines arc full of : special articles and maps showing how this portion of Europe could or should be divided up in order that the Jugoslav Jugo-slav races, who have been oppressed for so many centuries, shall have a government govern-ment of their own and be absolutely free from Teuton or Turk domination. Tho best part of it all is the fact that the people of the countries which are to form the new state will exercise the right of self-determination and will in a great measure decide their own fate. Such divisions of territory as are decided de-cided upon by the great powers will therefore receive popular indorsement, all the Jugo-Slav races will be upon an I equal footing and for the first time since they became civilized they will not be compelled to take up arms from time to time in order to prevent annihilation. |
