Show PATRIOTIC WORK OF B0K5JS - PRAISED Camp Leaders and Lads Complimented by Director Direc-tor J. Challen Smith. PatriotTc work of members of the boys' working reserve and their camp leaders was given praise by Director J. Challen Smith In his report to the executive committee com-mittee of the state council of defense at its meeting yesterday afternoon in the Walker Bank building. Credit was given for efficient aid afforded af-forded by the boys to agriculturists, horticulturists and other producers In the I period of cultivation and harvest this year, the chief criticism being of housing facilities afforded to the lads at some points. Recommendations submitted by Mr. Smith were taken under advisement by the executive committee. An appropriation of $5000 for advertising advertis-ing purposes was made to the state war savings committee, to be expended in a campaign to renew and increase interest tn this important department of the governments gov-ernments activities for obtaining contributions con-tributions of war funds. "Aside from the patriotic devotion of the boys," Director Smith says In his report, re-port, "much of the effectiveness of the emergency work was due to the camp leaders, who were 'on the Job' twenty- , four hours in the day. It is no small job to superintend a camp of boys of high school age under the conditions imposod on them. "Much of the difficulty is due to poor housing conditions and the lack of proper facilities to feed the boys. If the farmers are to continue to require boys to help them harvest their crops, they must come to the point where they will be willing to provide for their accommodation. To put forth the maximum of effort, a boy. no less than a soldier, must have good food and a comfortable bed. Reports show that in those camps where the boy wore taken Into the homes of the farmers, as at Spanish Fork, the production exceeded ex-ceeded that of those camps in tents, or In sheds, where the boys had to cook their own food and to wrap themselves up In blankets at night, not alwavs too warm when the thermometer took a sudden sud-den notion to drop. "There was, however, In all the camps a remarkable degree of health. Reports show that but six were compelled to return re-turn on account of illness, and no serious case occurred hi any camp. All the camps were under the caro of local physicians, physi-cians, acting under the instructions of the state board of health." |
