Show HUN TRENCH PHONE HIS CHRISTMAS GIFT One of the most unique Christmas gifts received in Salt I,ake was a field and trench telephone instrument, taken from a German officer on the battle front, which reached C. C. Campbell, district dis-trict manager of the Mountain States Telephone & Telegraph companv. It was sent by Lieutenant Clyde Y. Simpson, Simp-son, division signal officer of the Third division, Ameri'-an expeditionary forces, a resident of Cheyenne, Wyo., "who relieved re-lieved the German officer of its possession posses-sion after tho battle of Mount Blanc, near Suippe. on October 3. By Lieutenant Simpson the instrument is designated us a field buzzer phone, or telephone hand sot. It is of-.:crude and cumbersome construction, weighing near- 1 ly seven pounds, carried in a heavy leather case, and lias not tho neat and ' delicate appearance of similar instru- i ments used by the United States signal corps. For tho purpose of testing its efficiency, ef-ficiency, Mr. Campbell connected it up with the local lines yesterday and successfully suc-cessfully held conversation with officers at Fort Douglas. |
