Show territorial revenues there seems to be a growing ben ament in favor of cutting own the territorial abool tai which has done so much for the development of our excellent school system the reason for this is that the territory is again behind its revenue about three hundred thousand dollars the capt three legislatures have found largo deficits to meet and hava bonded to gat out of the trouble the result of that policy r a bonded indebtedness of and still another deficit what is now to be done the salt lake tribune say the ahola situation ia quite capable of being saved without added taxes let the three mills of territorial tax which dimply forma a gratuity to the outside schools be transferred to the territorial tax poper and the two mills bo the school tax shatter indeed would it bo to ive the ei revenue three and a half nulls and mats the territorial tax one rud a half mills but eay ona mill change that would kive the territory over a yea additional revenue THE agree with the proposal to cut down t e territorial school mill and hen let tha counties make up the difference that may be required for the anther support of the schools the territory has been very generous in school matters in fact there has been a zeal tor education hardly commensurate commena with our purse by all the settlements of the territory as well as the territory itself ills well enough to have boatly college and university buildings and the beat paid teachers in the country but all of this should not be had at a death dealing tax rate THE 13 opposed to a raise of the territorial taxes if it ba avoided but we would rather have a higher rate than further bonding the reckless bonding policy had better be stopped now out down the roads and bridges lacount that has for eo many years been kept up lor the benefit of new sparsely settled counties and reduce the high expenses of our territorial institutions by pursuing such a policy it will hardly be necessary to raise the rate of taxes these hard times |
