The announcement that American manufacturers are rapidly taking the place formerly held by German Ger-man manufacturers n the commercial life of Mexico and that the United Sta.tes will retain this trade even after the. Members of the commission com-mission arrived in Ogden this afternoon on their wav east. Washington D. C. being their fina.l destination. In addition to General Obregon and the purchasing purchas-ing agent the Mexican party includes three consular representatives. Major S. W. Miller. U. S. A., of El Paso, Texas, is the accreditee! representative of the government gov-ernment traveling with the commission. The party arrived In the United States at El Paso, Texas, more than two weeks ago and is now going east after spending spend-ing several days in Los Angeles and- San Fr;inci5co. Tiie next stop will be Chicago, after which tt Is planned for the Mexican representatives to visit the tomb of Abraham Abra-ham Lincoln at Springfield, 111. They will also visit SL Louis and Kansas City before proceeding to Buffalo. N. V., and other eastern cities. Tt is the first visit to the United States for General Obregon, who cannot speak English. All conversation with him Is carried on with Major Miller acting as interpreter. Although he le wearing civilian ci-vilian clothes upon this trip, General Ob-regon Ob-regon presents a striking appearance with his erect military stature and the rit;ht arm missing just below the elbow. The Mexican general lost bis right hand and a portion of the arm in one of the battles fought during' 191o. Senor Almada. who acts as the spokesman spokes-man for the party, cleverly avoided any direct questions regarding the mission of the Mexican commission . in the United States at this time. He smilingly assured as-sured a group of newspaper men today that its principal purpose wae- to- assure the American government qf the friendly intentions of the MexMcan government and to induce American manufacturers to direct their attention toward . greater trade with - the southern - republic- . ---- "Prior to the European war German manufacturers and jobbers held about SO per cent of all the foreign trade with Mexico," said the purchasing agent. "Now this trade is ' rapidly being taken up by your manufacturers in this country and it is with the sanction and desire of our government. We believe in reciprocity and for this reason we encourage our people to trade with the Americans. Fully SO per cent of the raw materials from Mexico are bought by the United States and it is for this reason that we encourage encour-age the purchase of American goods by our people." Mr. Almada declared that since the arrival of the Mexican mission- in this country many Pacific coast manufacturers manufactur-ers had entered upon a campaign for Increased In-creased trade relations with .Mexican customers. |
