Show FEAR OF SHORTAGE II COIL DISPELLED Exertion of Federal Control Expected to Stop Waste and Conserve Supply. WASHINGTON, Oct. 9. Every government govern-ment influence will be exerted this fall and winter to Increase the production of coal, and little fear of a serious shortage Is felt among officials here. This was Indicated In-dicated today at the White House following follow-ing receipt of reports front many sections of the country that retailers could not till orders promptly because of low stocks. Officials pointed out that similar conditions condi-tions exist nearly every year at this time. Persons who discussed the coal situation situa-tion with President Wilson today expressed ex-pressed the belief that with the Prelim-Inarv Prelim-Inarv arrangements for supervising coal production and distribution about com- pleted by the fuel administration, definite results In the way of Insuring a steady flow of coal to the markets would be evident evi-dent soon. Within a week all state coal administrators probably will have been named and will be co-operating with Dr. Garfield, the federal administrator, and local committees to stimulate the output. Officials close to the president do not credit predictions that government operation opera-tion of mines will become necessary. This procedure, they say. would disrupt the country's coal Industry and might result in a decrease In production. Senator Pomerene, a White House caller during the day, declared that coal operators op-erators under government prices are making mak-ing big profits, and that one wav to stimulate stimu-late production and reduce prices would be to prosecute operators for conspiring to misrepresent their production costs. |
