Show CHALLENGES WORLD TO EQUAL RECORD Apostle Grant Declares Vital Vi-tal Statistics of Mormon-ism Mormon-ism Are Unequaled. LAUDS CONSERVATION Calls Attention to Fast Days Observed; Cites Revelation of Prophet, Declaring that the Mormon church is in defiance of the world to equal its good vital statistics record in the matter of bodily strength of its membership, cleanliness clean-liness of mind, moral principle, lack of Insanity, In-sanity, fewer divorces and more children, President Heber J. Grant of the quorum of twelve apostles was the speaker at the tabernacle yesterday afternoon. Apostle Grant gave it as his opinion that this enviable condition of the people was a result of observance of the word of wisdom, wis-dom, which was promulgated to the world by Joseph Smith in 1S33 us a revelation. President Grant called attention to the fact that all defense organizations of the nation, from the president and his cabinet down to city bodies, were calling for conservation, and he declared that a general gen-eral observance of the word of wisdom and the fast day principle of the church throughout the nation would nerve to feed another nation of this size and take care of all the poor therein. Praises Prohibition. It was a matter of gratification, the speaker said, that the state had come to the adoption of prohibition as an economic eco-nomic principle, because be could see in its observance a betterment of the condition con-dition of the common weal tli, temporally, morally and in healthfulneas of body and mind. He asserted that recognition of fast day as given expression by the Mormon Mor-mon people, who once a month abstained from food for two meals. wAild furnish ample food to sustain all the poor in the land. He said that not only wa it di rectly in line with the conservation principle prin-ciple now being so widely advocated, but that It was recommended as a health nieasure by physicians. All these things, tiie speaker said, added to his knowledge and testimony that the revelations given through Joseph Smith were true and for the benefit of mankind. Apostle Grant pointed to the fact that until the war broke out the church had approximately 2'jO') misMonarlea in the field. Heavy Sacrifices Met. Counting the loss of the earning capacity ca-pacity of these men, together with the amount expended for their maintenance while in the service, the church hh a body sacrificed $2,000,000 annually for the love of God and mankind.
