Show SUFFRAGE COMING. The cause of suffrage has made a distinct gain during the week. The Indiana legislature has passed a bill giving the women of the state the right to vote for presidential electors and practically all the state officers except ex-cept the governor and secretary of state. Why these exceptions were made is not clear to the onlooker, but we suppose that the women will be strong enough to amend the law after the next election. The legislature of Maine has passed a resolution providing for woman wom-an suffrage by constitutional amendment, amend-ment, and it will be submitted to the voters at the September election. It would be impossible to forecast the result of the referendum, but it is highly probable the women will -win in the Pine Tree state. There has been considerable feeling in the east over the result of the last presidential election, elec-tion, when the women of the west are popularly supposed to have decided the issue, and a disposition to enfraiu-hise the women of the eastern states has been observable as a result. Jt will not be long before the suf f ra ge "w.ivo" engulfs (he country after the manner in which prohibition is rolling along at the present moment. |
