The current reports that gambling is being1 carried on more or less openly in this city and the In-j In-j creasing frequency of crimes against young girls wore made the subjects of chief consideration when Judge A. W. Agee delivered his charge to the grand jury which was impanelled this morning. Judge Agee ordered that eight be summoned sum-moned to prevent a. delay should one man not be able to served After the seven grand, jurors had been sworn In and received re-ceived their official instructions Judge Agee read his charge from the bench. In part, he said: I call your attention to the frequency fre-quency of reports in the public press of crimes committed against young girls and for which the guilty persons receive no punishment, or grossly inadequate in-adequate punishment, and 'urge upon you that you carefully inquire into all charges of pandering or of prostitution prostitu-tion and the conduct of places of iil- crimes committed against young girls. It is a matter of current topic in this city that divers persons have for years been conducting gambling houses at divers places within this city and in buildings and houses rented from others and when arrested for violation of such ordinances they have been allowed to deposit a sum of money in lieu of bail, which money they have forfeited forfeit-ed and then have not been prosecuted; prose-cuted; so that this method of depositing deposit-ing money in lieu of bail, which is forfeited in this manner, is in effect the payment of a license fee to the city for the privilege of gambling or conducting gambling houses or gambling gam-bling games within the city. I also urge a careful investigation of charges of illegal sales, or other illegal disposition, of intoxicating liquors, or other violations of the law on this subject In the county. The man or men who pay for and obtain a license to sell intoxicating liquors and who, in good faith, conduct tiie business busi-ness in accordance with tlje law, are entitled to protection against the acts of a man, men or association of persons per-sons who sell intoxicating liquors without obtaining a license or who sell during prohibited hours or to persons to whom sale may not legally be made. So far as it lies within my power to prevent It, I am determined there shall he no winking at violations of the law or compromising or temporizing temporiz-ing with crime, and I earnestly Invoke your aid as well as the aid and assistance as-sistance of every good citizen in this matter. |
