Show DESIRES CHANGES i HDU1 LI Secretary of State Board Makes Recommendations in Annual Report. Changes in the horticultural law of the state of Vtah are earnestly recommended recom-mended in the biennial report of the state horticultural commission submitted submit-ted yesterday by Secretary .1. Edward Taylor to Governor Simon Bamberger. It is urged that the law be altered so that all of tho horticultural inspection work can be placed under state control, instead of .being divided, as at Present, between this department and the commissioners com-missioners of the various counties. Uniform work over the stale will never be possible, says the report, under un-der the present system. Tho report sets forth the details of tho survey made with a view to reconstructing recon-structing the orchard business on broader lines and especially to increase : the outlet, but states that nothing was done, owing to the short crop ol 191b' and the high prices of raw materials. A general outline in orchard planting since 1910 is noted. This decrease was brought about by the cessation of speculative spec-ulative planting and the difficulty in marketing fruit the past five years. There were approximately 140,000 trees removed from orchards in 191,), of which 84,000 were- from commercial orchards, and the balance were naturally natural-ly unprofitable by reason of poor loca-' tion or poor varieties. In 191(3 there , were 75,000 trees removed, of which I 56,000 were from commercial orchards, j The total acreage in the state devoted to tbe industry is 29,000, a decrease of 1000 acres since 1914. The actual acreage acre-age in bearing orchards is increasing, as heavy plantings of trees made during the last few years come into bearing. Thus the fruit production will continue to increase the next two years, even though no additional plantings are made. The report contains many exhaustive tables of statistics, fully setting forth tbe conditions of the industry in the state. |
