Show MITCHELL IS HJllf wieje welsh Milwaukee Boy Gains Popular Pop-ular Verdict; Champion Refuses to Battle. MILWAUKEE. Wis.. Jan. 16. Richie Mitchell. Milwnnkce lightweight, defeated Champion Freddie Welsh on points in a ten -round cntct here tonight, sporting writers agreed. The first round was very tame, with Mitchell having a very slight lead on the portly champion. Welsh did not appear to warm up to hi3 work in this session. Not a real hard blow was landed. In the second Mitchell worked rapidly and had a nice edge, though he did not get through with any damaging smashes. Richie's left wts bothering Freddie and reddened up his face. Welsh blocked many, but enough filtered through his defense de-fense to make it interesting. Welsh refused to open up in the third, making a few light left pokes in the three minutes. Mitchell was at him all the time and sneaked enough home through a bulwark of forearms again to take the round. Freddie Loafs. It was Mitchell again in the fourth, because be-cause Welsh was not trying to fight. He covered all the time. Mitchell kept popping pop-ping away at him, but seldom landed. But, inasmuch" as Welsh was doing nothing at all, there was no dispute about the round. There was a trickle of blood from Mitchell's Mitch-ell's mouth at the bell. Richie made a show of Welsh in the fifth. He used little right-arm uppercuts in close to tilt Welsh's head and left hooks to the head and scored more frequently fre-quently than before. Welsh keot on the defensive entirely in the sixth, and Mitchell had a hard time penetrating his guard. He was trying all the way, however, and deserved the round. Mitchell started in the seventh and jolted jolt-ed Welsh with a right to the head. He kept working fast for a full minute, but was forced to slow up under tlie fast pace. Later on he used that short right uppercut to the chin and won the round handily. Mitchell Does It All. Welsh did not seem able to do anything in the eighth, Mitchell keeping both hands working all the while. A few punches got through, but Freddie was dable to skip to his corner at the bell. The crowd was booing and hissing Welsh for refusing refus-ing to fight. Welsh fousht a little in the ninth, but his efforts were ludicrous as far as pun-. pun-. ishing effects were concerned. Mitchell kept whaling away with both paw3, but was landing high with the right. The majority of his left hooks were blocked, but he again scored enough to win. The tenth was a repetition of the others. oth-ers. Welsh uncorked a few left hooks to the head in the first minute, but during the rest of the session he was stalling, hanging on and pretending to fight. Mitchell gave him a pretty fair slapping in the closing session. |
