DETROIT, Mich., Jan. 16. Jean Dubuc, veteran ot the Tigers' pitching staff and one of the most popular players personally person-ally tbat ever drew a salary from the ,junraleers ' cashier, will report, re-port, to the Salt Lake City club in the spring. Bill Bernhard, the former Cleveland pitcher, thought ho would like to have the Frenchman on his pitching pitch-ing stafT and persuaded President Navin to allow him to go to the Coast league. Dubue ought to be able to pitch good ball in the Coast league for several seasons if he can keep in shape physically. physi-cally. Hi's arm is not any too strong and is likely to go back on him if subjected sub-jected to a sudden strain, but as long as this member behaves he will get .by. Jean is by no means old, even as ago is recorded in baseball. He was 28 years of age last September and is thus nearly two years younger than Ty Cobb. Dubuc had his first trial in the majors ma-jors away back in IOCS with Cincinnati, then managed by John Ganzel, but was sent to Buffalo the following year, and from there he went to Montreal. At the conclusion of the 1911 season he was drafted by the Tigers. la 1912 he proved one of the most successful pitchers pitch-ers iu the American league, winning" seventeen games and only losing ten, with an average of 2.04 earned runs permitted. In 191o he also was effective, effec-tive, winning sixteen and losing fourteen. four-teen. However, largely because of poor physical condition, he was not so effective effec-tive last year. Owing to the r.bsence of Manager Bern-hard Bern-hard from the city last night, confirmation confirma-tion of the report from Detroit was not obtainable. It Is known, however, that Bernhard has been in telegraphic communication com-munication with President Navin of the Detroit club and that Dubuc was the subject of that communication. It is understood un-derstood that Pubuc, if he comes at all. will join tlie Saints on the same footing as any other pitcher that is. be will have to make good or be returned to Det roit. If he does step up to even a reasonable length of his old-time effectiveness. effect-iveness. Bernhard will have a pitcher worth having. Meantime. Bernhard is after at least one more big league heaver. It was originallv announced that Dubuc would join the Chattanooga club of the Southern association. |
