Show SOUTH AMERICA'S DUTY. Additional proof that the German government gov-ernment is aiming at world domination is found in the translation of dispatches by Count von Luxburg through the medium me-dium of the Swedish legation while the count was minister to Argentina. The news conies from Buenos Aires and is to the effect that a project for the invasion in-vasion of southern Brazil had been set on foot. As there are large colonies of Germans in this port of Brazil, they would doubtless have helped overturn the Brazilian republic for the purpose of attaching it to the Teutonic empire, lu due course of time the conquest of the whole of South America w-ould have followed and "Germany over all" would have, been that much nearer accomplishment. ac-complishment. Fortunately the autocratic Berlin government gov-ernment was unable to put its plan in operation and South America has been saved. Brazil has declared war a.nd a general census of tho German population popula-tion of the republic is in progress of preparation. Hereafter, according to advices from Rio .Janeiro, it will be necessary for Germans to carry identification identi-fication cards, for they are now objects of suspicion and distrust, not 'only in Brazil, but everywhere else in the world. The revelations will not cause anv surprise sur-prise in the United States, where numerous nu-merous German plots have been exposed ex-posed in the past two years. They may 'lave the effect, however, of ojening he eyes of the people of all the South meriean republics to the fact that hey have bnrely escaped enslavemeut tp to the present time and that should he central empires win the war South America will no longer consist of free inu hide; eudent states, but will be un-!cr un-!cr the iron heel of despotism. If liberty is worth anything to the people of Argentina and Chile, the two .ending countries of South America next to Brazil, they should at once follow fol-low the example of the Rio Janeiro government gov-ernment and d'-ciare war upon the destroyers de-stroyers of the peace of the world, the : military despotis:n responsible for the wreck of nations and the slaughter of millions of men, women and children. It took the people of the United States a long-time to scent the danger to the whole world should the kaiser dominate Luror.e, but we finally became convinced con-vinced that the ouly way to maintain our liberty and national rights would be to fight for them. So congress, upon the advice of President Wilson, declared that a state of war existed. Brazil took the same action the other day, and it now remains for the, other South American Amer-ican republics to declare where they stand in this world crisis. Tho tide of Germanic invasion cannot be rolled back by declarations of either benevolent or sympathetic neutrality. Only straight-out straight-out declarations of war, backed up by men and materials, count at this time. The world will be. slipping backward so long as the struggle continues, and the neutrals cannot hope to escape the general wreck if it drags along through a series of years. The United States, owing to its agricultural and industrial development and distance from the theater of actual war, can undoubtedly stand the terrific strain longer than any of the other great powers involved. But we shall be compelled to drop everything else and make war our sole business if we are to hold the banner of liberty aloft and save the world from the German Ger-man yoke. There is no good reason why the man power of Argentina and Chile should not be thrown into the scale on the side of tho United States and the entente allies, along with the resources of both countries, for unless we triumph the Monroe doctrine will be a dead letter let-ter and South America will be without protection in the future. The latest revelations concerning tho intrigues of Count von Luxburg leave, the South Americans no choice but to fight for the security of their homes and hearths. If they have not the manhood or the courage, cour-age, if they are as sneaking and treacherous treach-erous as some of the pacifists in the United States, they are not fit for freedom free-dom and sooner or later they will be gobbled up and no tears will be shed anywhere in the world. |
