L IS ON HIS WAY EAST g I Expects Coming Season to Be Record-breaker in Many Respects. iy ri FOj Charles W. Nelson of Tahoe, Cal., as- j sistant general manager of the Lake Ta- A hoe Railway & Transportation company K g and Tahoe tavern, arrived In Salt Lake Lai yesterday to confer with C. I. McPaul, Ww distri-'t freight and passenger agent of ipai the Southern Pacific, with reference to H the tourist business for the coming season, fij Mr. Nelson will remain here until this ro fE afternoon, when he will leave on a six weeks' trip through the east, to confer ro with passenger traffic officials of various .d railroads and officials of the numerous y . tourist agencies operating through the l-v western country. , a',' After Tahoe resorts are closed in the Hi i-1 fall Mr. Nelson spends the greater part - - ; of the winter in San. Francisco and other coast cities, lining up business for the i I following season. About March 1 each HH "ear he starts on a six weeks' to two ml months' tour of the larger cities of the Hg ti east, telling of the scenic wonders and mun vacation resorts of western America, with ipr emphasis on Lake Tahoe and the Tahoe H country. Pleased With Outlook. bE u Mr. Nelson is enthusiastic over the out- J a. look for tourist travel through the west ffla during the coming season. All in all. 'L-fc he believes, the season will be much more ijTO profitable to the western count rv as a y'J whole than 1915 was. The volume of jf ie travel may not be so great, but he be- 't v. lieves that the visitors will not be in Lla such a hurry as they were last year, and W will spend more time at other points than wii San Francisco, inasmuch as the exposi- iJn tion there will be closed. "Tahoe is gaining in popularity each ! year, he said. "It is becoming better ' known throughout the east. We have I iv tried various method. of art vei-Hsi ncr and L 3 expect to try many more, but the beat g medium we have found is the tourists r themselves. On my trip through the east i' 1 expect to call on traffic officials of various railroads and talk with the ticket salesmen, the men who come in direct J i' contact with the traveling public By I q f a persona chat with them I can clear jfcrV up many obscure points with reference to jbn the attractions and service of Tahoe. Booming Entire West. t!-e "Of course, I am most interested in afy Tahoe. but our publicity in the east bears ir'n more or less on the entire western counsel coun-sel tr-" Many persons would not cross the continent to see Lake Tahoe, but by em- Kra phasizing the fact that It is only a short fr. j trip from Salt Lake City, Yellowstone jL- park. Tosemite park, the Big Trees and jFj other attractions, we impress Tahoe, as ff well as other scenic points in the west, Jv- on the mind of prospective tourists. We Ify are strong for Salt Lake as a stopping lis Place on a transcontinental journey and Tahoe as a resting place between Salt ft: Lake and the Pacific coast." fzl. No new attractions are planned for Ta- B. hoe this summer, except an additional 1 i hydroplane. One machine was there all ft last summer. When they both arrive IS- this year some great sport is anticipated, t- inasmuch as the rivalry between the owners of the two machines is intenselv t; keen and hot races will be frequent. fe Great Hotel Planned. Ie So great is the confidence of western 4a C capital in the future of Tahn that & fcr S half-million-dollar hotel is being planned E' for its shores by Anita Baldwin, daughter c- of the famous "Lucky" Baldwin of earlier SC. days. The hotel is to be built at the al base of Mount Tallac and it will be con-Kpu con-Kpu nected with the present resort bv an ex-He ex-He celient automobile road. So much care QpC is to be exercised in the selection of the Bai plans and the construction of the hostelrv JTei that it is not to be completed for about - two years. piF The completion of excellent automobile I- roads in recent years has done a great mfr deal to bring the Pacific coast residents r to Tahoe. according to Mr. Nelson. Still o- further interest on the part of residents fLJ of the western country, as well as of Ifi; 1 transcontinental automobile traveler is fe anticipated by Mr. Nelson with the com- l;b- ptetion of the road through Tiog pass Hgi across the Sierras. The road is being Tai built by the government and is rapidly l. . nearing completion. |
