Show JOHN MacNEILL FOUND GUILTY BY COURT-MARTIAL DUBLIN, May 24. via London, 3:32 p. m, John MaeNeill, president of the Sinn Fein volunteers, has been found guilty by court-martial of complicity in the Irish rebellion. His sentence will be promulgated within a day or two. There have been many conflicting rumors as to the part John MaeNeill played in the present Irish rebellion, one report being that he disagreed with the leaders at the last moment as to the advisability of the uprising, taking the view that defeat was inevitable. He is credited with having issued a general warning to Sinn Feiners against participation in the revolt, following which, it was said, MaeNeill and several sev-eral immediate adherents went into seclusion se-clusion outside of Dublin and took no part in the actual rebellion. John Dillon, iu a speech in the house of commons May 12, declared that but for the action of MaeNeill, "who broke the back of the rebellion, the military would have been fighting still." John M acNeill, besides being president presi-dent of the Sinn Fein volunteers, was professor of law in the National university uni-versity and was the organizer and vice president of the Gaelic league. |
