O Ten Years Ago This Week (From the files of the Bingham Bulletin for April 17, 1930). David D. Moffat, assistant general gen-eral manager of the Utah Copper company, was named to succeed Louis S. Cates as vice president and general manager. Mr. Moffat had been associated with the company for 20 years and his experience and qualification for the higher post was recognized in his appointment to the posi- tion as general manager. After eight years as general manager and vice president of the Utah Copper company, Louis S. Cates resigned to accept the presidency of the Phelps-Dodge corporation. Mr. Cates first came to Utah in 1903, following his graduation from the Massachusetts Massachu-setts Institute of Technology the preceding year and some mining work in Mexico. He held various positions with the Boston Consolidated Con-solidated Copper company and in 1910 was general manager, the year the company was consolidated consoli-dated with the Utah Copper company. com-pany. He then went to Ray, Arizona, Ari-zona, and was credited with opening open-ing and development of the property pro-perty there. In 1913 he became general manager of the Ray Consolidated, Con-solidated, returning to Salt Lake City August 1, 1919, as assistant general manager of the Utah Copper Cop-per company.
