Show Killed Goose That Laid Golden Egg Such Is Marshal Nebekcr's Opinion of Meat Packers of Eastern Cities. "'The packors killed the goose that laid the golden egg." Such was tho remark yesterday of United States Marshal Aquila Kebeker in discussing the cause for the extreme altitude of the price of beef. Marshal Nebeker bewailed the fact that be had been driven out of the romantic cattle cat-tle industry and forced into the less picturesque though more lucrative business busi-ness of sheep raising by what ho termed the mistaken methods of tbo meat packers of the country. As be warmed to the subject the marshal talked with the conviction of a, man who has paid the prico of experience experi-ence for his information. He said: Ranchers were forced to quit raising cattle becauso the prices paid by the packing companies left no margin of profit and often cut under the cost of production. Beef cattle became scarcer and the packers pack-ers retreated stubbornly before the rising prices, "passing the buck" with dexterity to the consumer whenever their hands were forced. The only solution would bo the regulation reg-ulation of tho industry by the government gov-ernment and the fixing of a fair minimum price to be paid to cattle raisers for beef cattle". Under euch a condition of protection against pressuro from tho packers I would be one who would gladly go back into tho industry. |
