Show BATTLE IN WEST APPEARS TO BE AT STANDSTILL LONDON'. Dec. 4, 10:S0 p. m. The battle bat-tle in the west appears to be at a standstill. stand-still. The allies and the Germans have attempted to take the offensive at different dif-ferent points along the front, but as neither claims to have made any advance and both offlciai reports mention repulses re-pulses of the netny, it is evident that the attacks which have been made have not met with much success. Under the title. "Four Months of War." the French Bulletin of the armies Is publishing' a report oi the entire operations opera-tions of the war. In it the explanation is made that the French were unable to take the offensive until the British army-was army-was ready and that the advance into Alsace, Al-sace, which has been criticised as bad stratesrv. was designed to draw the Germans Ger-mans from the Belgian -front. This plan did net succeed, it says, and the allies were driven back to the Seine. The arrival of Australian and New Zealand Zea-land contingents in E.ypt on forty transports trans-ports is quoted as another triumph for the British navy. The German cruiser Emden was not far from this fleet of transports w'nn she was overtaken and destroyed by the Australian rruiser Sydney. Syd-ney. It is taken for granted, however, that the convoy of the transports was so strong that even the Emden would not have dared attack them. The statement made in the Italian parliament par-liament by Premier Salandra thai Italy should maintain her attitude of watcn-ful watcn-ful and armed neutrality has created much interest here and sympathy is expressed ex-pressed for the aspirations of the Italian people. |
