Show M01 COLONY IS LID BOARD PUZZLE Members Disagree on Ex tension on Payments for Property ASK FOR MORE TIME Doubt Exists as to Legal Right of State to Take Favorable Action What to lo w th the Clarion colony establ shed under the state Piute proj ect in southern Utah by the Jew sh Colonial assoc at on has developed into a perplexing problem for the state land board wh ch considered the matter at great length yesterday Tho Jew sh farmers on the project are asl ng for another extens on of t me to make payments ol interest and pr nc pal due the state on the 6000 acres taken up Doubt ex sts as to whether the state has any legal r ght to grant further extensions in ew ot the tact that t must get returns on its in estment from the reservo r fund Dan el Alexander a local attorney representing the colon and Benjamin Brown, president of the assoc at on met w th the board yesterday afternoon in an attempt to reach some sort of 3e c s on as to the future of the colony Members Disagree Some members of the board took the stand that the colony had been g en all the extens ons that the state could atiord to g te and that payment of back interest and princ pal installments should be insisted upon Others par ticularly Pres dent W D Candland were inclined to consider the broader saue involved and bel eved the colony should be fostered and helped 0 er its present financial difficulties as far as poss ble Attorney Alexander declared that if the board was inclined to hold the set tiers rigidly to the r contracts then t m ght as well g ve the Bettlers notice to roid their tents and depart These men are not farmers he said They are ta lors and shoe makers and other art sans who have come out here from the crowded eastern centers seeking an opportunity to make a liv ng Isaturally they have made m stakes and are bat ng a bard time of it but the state of Utah annot afford to see them fail The board should consider the values of manhood in volved and should be as lenient as pos s ble Opposes Extension. W I Lyn h secretarj of the board po nted out that other ind vidual set tiers under the Piute project were be ing held accountable to the r contracts and that many of them bad accused the board of unfair discr minat on n favor of the settlers in the Clarion colon) He added that the state cannot bu Id res ervoirs and undertake million dollar projects without insisting on compl ance w th contracts Inasmuch as the colonv has under culti at on onlv 3000 acres of the 6000 acres taken up and is under an un necessary burden by carry ng the inter est on the non producing acreage Pres dent Candland s ggested that the state should cancel the 3000 acres unculti ated and restore t to the state This would reduce the burden ttorne Mexander thought the suggestion a good one f it coul 1 be arranged Mr Brovn said the colonists wo Id regret losing the other 3000 acres but would ha 0 to accept the plan rather than fa I cnt relj The matter was finally taken un lcr advisement and will be onsderel further today |
