Show SENATORS SAY THEY WILL UDSIFFRIGE Mrs Margaret Zane Cher dron Given Encourage ment in Senate OPPOSITION IN HOUSE Will Press on With Work, Salt Lake Woman Given Signal Honor Mrs Margaret Zane Cherdron state chairman of tho Congress onal Un on of Won an s Suffrage returned yesterday afternoon fron Washngton where she took a prominent part in the demonstra tion n behalf of woman s suffrage at the open ng of congress I bel eve said Mrs Cherdron last even ng that the senate is now ready to vote n favor of suffrage but I am somewhat d sappointed in the attitude of the house All the senators I talked to expressed themselves in favor of a const tut onal amendment for suffrage, wh le all the members of the house I saw were opposed to t I believe that the expenen e of the other women was the same Desp te the 6eeming opposition of the house Mrs Cherdron is far from d s ouraged over the cause of nat onal suf frage She would not say there was no hope of favorable act on by both house and senate at this session of congress '-he adra ts freely the opposition in the house but has not cnen urj hODe Encouraged in Work. As to the broad outlook for the cause of suffrage Mrs Cherdron is most opti mistic saying Our convention in Wash sgton will have its good effect The de feat of suffrage in New Jersey and hevi York has strengthened, rather than hurt our cause And Presi dent WilBon has given us to under stand that be has changed his mind since a year ago when be expressed himself as of the opinion that enf frage was a matter for the individ ual states to handle At his re caption to the women he said as I much, so we do not have to fear opposition op-position from the White house to actum by congress. The suffrage campaign is now thoroughly organised in Washing ton. At our mass meeting in the Belasao theater Washington, on the eve of the opening of congress we raised a campaign fund of (45,000 in a few minute I think that quite remarkable We charged an admission and then passed the hat We even took every woman s ear fare. But a total of (45 000 made it worth while. ThU monev will be used in the national work. We have a perma nent headquarters in Washington, and women are at work there eon tmuously particularly women from the states which have not yet got suffrage Got Signal Honor Mrs Cherdron was chairman at the big mass meeting in the Belaseo theater nut referred to Utah suffrage workers regarded this as a signal honor to their state chairman Following the suffrage convention Mrs. Cherdron went to Norfolk Vs. where she had a pleasant visit at the home of Mrs Joseph H Young former Iv of 8alt Lake. Mrs. Young is the daughter of City Commissioner Henry W Lawrence and Mr Youngis a for mer 8alt Lake railroad man. He u now president of the Norfolk Southern rail road. On her way home Mrs Cherdron made a brief visit in Oiirjuro While she was gone, Mrs Cherdron was so engrossed with the suffrage question ques-tion thst she did not hear any gossip oo national politics Mrs Cherdron is a Republican, but she said last evening that she did not hear any presidential possibilities mentioned all the time she was gone She is of the opinion how ever that every party w 11 have a suf frage plank in its national platform in the next campaign |
