| Show TOWS OF TURKEYS REAGHPOSTDFFICE They Are Quickly Trans ferred Along With Other Christmas Packages Three tons of turkeys bounced nto the Salt Lake postoffice yesterdaj The bounc ng vas not due to tho elast c ty of the turkeys but to the system of handling ma 1 in the office They came from Vernal and w th n half an hour after they arrived in th s c ty the several dealers to vhom they were con s gned caught them ou the bounce Not a b rd rema ned in the postoffice more than th rty minutes and while they were there they were n a room that is pract cally as cold as the ice bot of a jack ng house Unnumbered other er shable art cles are com ng through the ma Is these lays and are as qu ckly handled But a few parcels were to be seen at 6 o clock last n ght m the room that could be tw ce filled w th what had been through it during the day "Vet the parcels were cont nu ng to come in a string down the chute from out s de for the per shable gools are nev er taken into the warm atmosphere of the ma n workroom An iron chute carr es them down into the sorting and routing room and from there they are sent out for delivery with n a few minutes after gl d ng smoothly below like so many school children at a sum mer playground. The mail is being handled through out the postoSice w th the same expe dition that characterizes the delivery of perishables Everyone realizes that to get once behind would mean to be come hopelessly buried Consequently the force has been ncreased bv about fifty tnen equally divided as to car riers and clerks The result will be that the close of the Christmas rush season will see the work tables of the Eostoffice as clear on the morning of December 26 as on a morning in June But to accomplish this t has become necessary for all hands to work over time in addition to having extra help The mail yesteraay was eas ly 30 per cent heavier than at the same time a year ago according to Postmaster Noble Warrum and his assistants To expedite the handling of the mail ex tra pouch racks have been constructed until the sorting facilities of the of fice have been trebled Already a dozen extra wagons are busy and it is expected that by tomorrow the num ber of extras will be increased to twenty while in the business district an autmobile truck is kept busy with three earners operating from it all day |
