Show Youngster Wins Race Over Lagoon Course Clifford Holbrook, 14 Years of Age, Holds Lead All the Way; F. E. Walker Is Again Winner of the Time Prize. WITH a fifteen-micute handicap to the good, Clifford Holbrook, Hol-brook, a 14-year-old youngster, young-ster, held the lead in the nineteenth annual Lagoon road race yesterday and romped home a winner several yards ahead of his closest competitor, com-petitor, R. Nagley. "With Isagley came A. Esiandon, who was see'mingly tacked onto Nagley 'a rear wheel so close was the finish. Close after them men came in in groups, running so near together and bo ast that the seven scorers had difficulty in ascertaining their positions in the finish. F. E. Walker again won the time prize in the race. Walker ran from scratched, and all along the way his jersey, jer-sey, number 81, could be seen creep ing closer and closer on those aheai of him, and before the final distance was reached he had placed Bhrty bicycle bi-cycle riders in his rear. At that hi was unable to come within four min utes of the speeding Holbrook, who had been given a-fifteen-minute handicap. Roads Are Good. The race was one of the most sensational sen-sational of the annual events. The roads were in good shape, thougt. dusty, and the steep grade ovei White's hill, which had formerly bee! a bugbear to road racers, was sooi passed, thanks to the grading nir. chine which busied itselt in that vi cinity this spring. North of this hili, however, a deep stretch of heavy dusti was found, and in this many of the riders were forced ttj drop out. I H. Kramer, who started at scratch, was forced out of tho race near Center-ville Center-ville when he went head-on into a heavy farm wagon. Kramer was in the heavy section of the road, and was putting forth his grittiest efforts with his head down low and his legs working mechanically. He was knocked unconscious by the impact, but soon recovered. Has Two Falls. Nelson Osborn, who finished twenty-second twenty-second in the race, was another to meet with mishaps. When he was yet four j miles from the Lagoon finish he fell to I the ground, sliding fifteen feet. How- ever, he picked himself up and contin-1 ued the hike, although considerably handicapped by the loss of time aud his injuries. When but a short distance dis-tance further, he had trouble with his pedal and was again sent to the ground. Again he got up, 'and appar-eutlv appar-eutlv enraged at the acciflents''sped on to the finish at a rapid rate. The record time tor the course vas 42 minutes and 19 seconds, by Walker, who ran from snatch. Forty-two prizes will be given the winners by as many business concerns of this city. The prizes have been arranged ar-ranged in "the order of value that the winning men merit, and in the list will be seven bicycles of excellent make. Moving Grandstand. The idea of running a special La-, goon train along the course with the riders proved excellent, and the passengers pas-sengers were all enabled to see the race inch by inch. The finish proved especially interesting, and the passengers passen-gers wero alert with interest until fifty-three fifty-three of the eighty-one riders had crossed the tape. Of the others, ten dropped out,- and for those few stragglers strag-glers continuing, the special train did not wait. The finish follows: Finish. Rider. Handicap.-" Time.
