Show WISH NOMINATED FOB SCHOOL BOARD Well-known Young Attorney Attor-ney Is Selection of Voters in the Fourth Ward. HAMMOND IS BEATEN Much Interest Is Manifested in Other Conventions to Be Held. George F. Wasson, a prominent Salt Lake attorney, was nominated for the board of education from the Fourth ivard at a nonpartisan mass meeting held last evening' at the Lowell school. Mr. Was- son was given tho nomination after a i sharp contest with James T. Hammond, ! present member of tho board of educa- j Uon. . I Nearly 600 voters of the Fourth ward I attended the mass convention and the leaders of tho. two sides In the contest . worked hard for their favorites. The rivalry between, the two . sides was intense, in-tense, but good natured. No issue was raised In the nominating speeches, Jlr. Hammond's supporters .urging his re-nomination re-nomination on the strength of the record he had made during his years of servlco as a member of the board, and Mr. Wus-son'a Wus-son'a friends suggesting that new blood and. new ideas were always good on a board of education. Beneath the surface, however, it ap- : peared that the opposition to Mr. Ham- ! mond was a criticism Of tho present ! board. New Issue Is Raised. A former member of the board of education edu-cation from the Fourth ward gave it as his opinion that Superintendent D. H. ! Christensen was the issue in the Fourth j ward and that -the opposition to the su- perintendent had been successful in nam- j ing Mr. Wesson. However, uo tiling de- ' veioped at the mass meeting to indicate 1 that opposition to the superintendent had I entered into the contest. j The vote, on the nomination of the : candidate for the board was: Wafeon, 34'.'; Hammond. 25.'!. Immediately after; the announcement of tho vote Mr. Hum- , mond rongratulated Mr. Wasson on Ids nomination. Ordinarily the nonpartisan nomination for the school board is equivalent to election elec-tion and it is likely that the election in the Fourth wa rd will be no exception. Mr. Hammond's friends said after the meeting that while they were disappointed disap-pointed at the failure of the convention to renominate Mr. Hammond, they were not disposed to carry the contest to the ; pulls and believed that Mr. Wasson would be elected without any opposl- i tion. I Glen Miller presided at the mass con- j vention and John James acted as secre- , tary. The school corridors were lilled to overflowing by the vorers of the Fourth j ward when the meeting opened and some j had difficulty getting inside the building. build-ing. Nominated by Park. Mayor famuel C. Pai k, formerly a member of the- school board, placed Mr. Hammond's name before the convention. Pan- j ford, who placed Mr. Wasson in nomination. nomina-tion. Mr. Sa-nford eatd that Mr. Wasson was a young man of vigor and encrgv, of advanced and progressive ideas. He paid that, without, saying anything in disparagement dis-paragement of the record of any member of the board of education, it was always S good to infuse nw blood and new fdas into the school system to keP it abreast j of the advanced fentiment of the day. No seconding speehes were made and beyond some little a opts use at the con-J con-J elusion of each nominating Fpeeh there j was no demonstration. The meeting was I orderly and fu let and not a Eiicreestion of j a quarrel marred tiie ga thering. !
