Trill-. ing to contribute a little in order to . help their city and state much It is tho purpose of this campaign to raise a minimum of $40,000, which " will bo divided as follows: "Wizards ' of tho Wasatch, $15,000; publicity bureau, $12,000; convention fund, $8000; niinos and manufactures, $5000. But, whilo $40,000 is the minimum required, re-quired, tho hopo Is that at least $60,000 can bo ralsod, in which ovont the ad-- ad-- dltional monoy will go to the goneral advertising fund o tho publicity bureau. Speaking generally of the campaign, it is a waste of onorgy and vspaco to dilato on the advantages of advertising. advertis-ing. Cities and states roquiro advertising adver-tising just as certainly as do depart- t nient 6toros or other businesses, and in their growth and development cities aud states respond to judicious advertising adver-tising with the same certainty as private pri-vate businesses. The successful merchant mer-chant will tell you that tho essential elements of success are, first, good merchandise; second, good salesmanship. salesman-ship. Ho will also inform you that, no matter how good tho merchandise, the merchant will nevertheless fail if un-j un-j able to attract purchasers to his store. t Advertising of tho right Eort, conducted con-ducted with liberality and' persistence, accomplish euoccss. Tt is likewiso with a community or a state. No matter t what the natural advantages of a city, or the soil's fertility in tho surrounding surround-ing region, or tho wealth stored in the hills, only tho slowest development is tSB possible unless moans aro taken to pre-sent pre-sent to the world outside tho tre-Mffjj tre-Mffjj mendous possibilities that await tho fJrlS wise investor. Tho Commercial ' club publicity Sjgfi bureau has boon hampered from tho fsl beginning through meagerncss of Myj funds; nevertheless, it has accomplished mffii much tangible good for tho state. Much Sua more can be accomplished by continu- iance of its oxistonco if equipped with adequate funds. The minimum sum to bo given to the bureau, $12,000, Is not sufficient to maintain it to the best advantago for one year, but it will suffice) to keep tho bureau in operation and enable it to accomplish at least a groat part of what should be done by this organization. Tho Wizards of the Wasatch gave a really excellent celebration last year, which attracted many visitors to the city. There is no doubt that tho cos: o! the celebration was restored to the . liiiTchants of the city, cvon though, through an error which will not bo re-. re-. pen ted, tho principal parade was given on Saturday evening, with tho result oi an almost complete stoppago of business. busi-ness. Tho board of directors of the Wizards of the Wasatch is composed uf a group of the most, energetic and . vuterprifiinc young mon in tho city, and ihoy can bo depended upon to more thin duplicate their success of 1913. Nilt Lako is a hospitablo town; we rnjov having visitors nuu wo aro glad to interlaiu thoni, m that tho sum of snnn proposed to bo raised tor this purpose is quito moderate and well within our means. As to tho mining industry and manufacture, manu-facture, tho amount nailed, $5000, is 71 r. Charles Tyng. who is chairman of the publicity bureau and is in general gen-eral charge of the campaign, has worked out a very claborato plan by which ho hopos to impose this joint fund equitably upon all the parsons in t the community who will bcnoiil. by it. MI"fo person will bo nskod to contribute ae excessive amount. In ovory instance in-stance tho request wiJI bo for a sum , moderately proportioned to the extent of the business from which it is to be l aid. We hopo that tho campaign will work out Fuccessfully, and have no doubt that the citizens of Salt Lake will respond with their accustomed generosity gen-erosity to this legitiraato appeal. |
