Show IMPORTANT STRIKE MADE IN OPOHONGO A very important striko has just been made in the Opohongo mino at Mammoth, Mam-moth, a splondid body of gold ore being oponod in a block of ground upon which Mark Steele and William Johnson havo a leaso. These leasers havo been at work in the Opohongo for tho past bIx mouths and during that timo they have Bhippcd about threo carloads of vory nice cop- Eer, and it was while following a Bmall unch. of coppor oro that they encountered encoun-tered the gold-bearing quartz. When it was first located this quartz contained nothing but the gold and tho loasors passed tho rock up for several daya, considering con-sidering it of no particular value, but later, thoy had it assayed, and when tho roport from tho assayor showed that it carried five ounces of gold thoy nearly-died nearly-died of heart failure. Other aBsays woro made and all of them showed better than an ounce in gold, the best going as high as bIx ounces, says tho Eureka Eoporter. Thoodoro Hatfield, tho secretary of the oompany, was out from tho capital yostorday, and in company with Superintendent Super-intendent Samuel Cox made a very thorough thor-ough examination of tho now find. Thoy state that the now oro body is fully ten foet in width and that a pilo sample showed two and a half ounces in gold, as well as a little copper. This moans that tho ore is worth in tho neighborhood neighbor-hood of $50 to the ton, just as it is broken down by the minors. To start with it contained only tho gold, but tho last few days somo copper has been coming in. This oro is entirely different from anything that the Opohongo has had in recent years. Most of the ore that has been mined from this ground during the timo that leasers havo been at work thore has been what is known as arsenical arseni-cal copper, while tho new ore body contains con-tains wnat might be termed gold quartz. There is considerable iron and spar in the quartz and tho ore deposit has the earmarks of permanoncy. Tho now dis-covory dis-covory has been made in a portion of the property that has not been developed devel-oped to any extent, and consequently there is a splondid chanco of it making mak-ing into something big." Another thing that makes it of much importance is tho fact that it is deeper than any of. the ore bodies that havo been found in this mine In tho past few years. Most of tho oro that has been minod from the Opohongo, and from which the company has paid itB dividends, was taken from the workings above the 600 level. Some work was done to a depth of 700 feet and a small deposit of rather low-grade copper oro was found on this lost mentioned level, but systematic prospecting of tho vein failed to roveal anything of importance. impor-tance. Tho ore body that Steele & Johnson havo opened is about fifty feet above tho 700 level, and from present indications it will oxtend to even greater dopth. Other blocks of ground in the Opohongo Opo-hongo are being worked under the leasing leas-ing system by Skewos & Smith and Wido & Smith, copper oro being mined. In tho upper workings of tho mino 'Superintendent Oox is prospecting an entirely now ore channel with conditions condi-tions very favorable for getting into some new ore. |
