It la generally known that National Na-tional Committeeman Wallace and Slate Chairman Thurman are going over tho entire list of Utah appointments and endeavoring to reach an agreement as to recommendations. It is announcod that the complote llBt of recommendations recommenda-tions will be ready within a week. Now that the Ogden postofflce matter is settled, set-tled, so far as It lies in the power of the national committeeman and state chairman to settle it. there is considerable consid-erable speculation as to the other offices. of-fices. Page for Receiver. There appears to bo but little question ques-tion that Samuel L. Page of Pluto county will be recommended by National Committeeman W. R. Wallace and State Chairman S. R. Thurman for receiver of tho Land office in Salt Lako City. Mr. Pago is one of the best known and most popular Democrats in the southern part of the state and has served two terms In the legislature. The last time, however, how-ever, he was nominated upon an independent inde-pendent tickot and had to have his name placed upon tho ballot by petition. The fa-ct that he won, hands down, attests tho popularity that his friends are now pointing to as a reason why ho should be recognized. Mr. Page was the humorist hu-morist of tho lower hous of the legislature, legis-lature, during the two terms that ho served, but this Is not being urged against him, as ho did his utmost for his county and the state of Utah in general and was Instrumental in securing secur-ing the passage of some excellent legislation. legis-lation. There has been some question as to the rocommendallon of Mr. Page, in view of tho fa:l that L. L. Tanner of Beavr City 1b an active candidato for United Stales marshalship. Mr. Tanner Is a resident of Beaver City, and It has been urged that It would be unfair to the remainder of the state to give two such Important offices to the extreme sou tli. Howevor, It Is believed that tho entire matter will work out in a man-nor man-nor favorable to Mr, Page. Marshalship's Fight. Tho United States marshalship appears lo be tho hardest nut that tho powers that be in Utah liavo to crack. Aquila Nebeker was recommonded for tho position posi-tion by a majority of tho Democratic stato committee, but there liaK been a lively contest on 'since that time. Mr. Nebeker is being fought tooth and nail by certain Interests and tho mattor is Btill away up in tho air. There arc at least fifteen candidates for tho office and at the present timo Nebeker. 'Wllford Giles of Provo and Ij. T. Tanner of Beaver City are tho lenders. There also is a mlxup on the office of United States diKtrlct attorney. Frank B. Stophons, who forsook the Republican Republi-can partv and became a Democrat when William 'Jennings Bryan was first nominated nomi-nated for the presidency, was recommended recom-mended bv tho Democratic state committee, com-mittee, but it is not at nil certain that Mr. Stephens will Hccuro tho recoin-mondatlon recoin-mondatlon of the national committeeman and tho state chairman. W. W. Ray, it Is Bald, has an excellent chanco for tho appointment. Warrum for Postmaster. Gould B. Blakely In said to be In tho lead for register of tho land office, but. fte Is bolng opposed by D. S. Cook of Ogden and one or two other strong men. ' , , . DouglaH Swan -will bo recommended for collector of Internal revenue and Noble Warrum will receive tho indorsement for postmaster in thin city. Should the rnvenuo office no taxon irom uinij, a. p. Smith, who was a candidate for the postmastersblp at Ogden, will probably be recommended for the chief deputy-whip deputy-whip In Utah. Hpwovcr. It Is behoved that the office will remain In this city. |
