Show KANSAS HO BY 10 FROM NEBRASKA Attempt Made to Lynch a Negro Who Confesses That He Attacked Woman. HIAWATHA, Kan.. May '20. A mob of 200 porEons from Falls City, Neb., made a threatening demonstration tonight at the local jail, where William Bellow, a negro chnrged with attacking Mrs. Anna Kellar of FaJls City, iri a prisoner. After the crowd had promised that tho negro would not bo harmed, he was brought cut on tho Jail steps that Mrs. Kellar might see him. When she identl- fled him as her assailant, the crowd closed In around the jail entrance, but the sheriff and his assistants drew their revolvers and held the mob at bay until Bellew could be taken back to his cell. Tho, crowd made no further effort to enter the building. Mra. Xellar was reported to be in a serious condition and caroo here against tho ndvice of her physicians. FALLS CITY, Neb., May 20. As an outgrowth of tho attack on Mrs. Kellar by Bellew, a mass meeting of citizens was hold hero tonight and resolutions adopted to rid tho town of bad characters, char-acters, both black and white. There was an exodus of negroes yesterday following follow-ing tho excitement attending the assault and more went today. The posse which captured Bellew near Hiawatha say tho negro admitted the crime and asked that ho be shot before a Falls City mob reported re-ported to bo after him appeared. The sheriff of Richardson county left for Lincoln tonight to secure a requisition for the return of Bellew from Kansas. The legal preliminaries will require some time, and It is not believed here ho will be brought back for a. number of days. |
