Show DESERET MATCHES ATTRACT ATTENTION Several Interesting tennis matchea were played off Monday on the Peseret courts Not only were the games all fought out to a finish, being hard fast and close, but the victor in one set at least was compelled to go the full three sets after winning the first one. Seven matches were played, all being singles. The first up waa P. Smith and Net-tloton. Net-tloton. the latter winning by tho scores of 6-2. 8-2. Jansen bea.t Christensen in some hard-fought hard-fought games, tho final scores being 6-0. 6-1. In the Jones-Wllllams match it is only fair to say that the former was not up to his normal form In play, as he lost by the scores of 6-0, 6-0. The hardest match of the dav was between be-tween Wright and Groesbeck. the latter winning the first set, which went to deuc by the scoro of f-7 This only seemed to put Wright on his mottle, as ho readily took the next two sets, 6-3, 6-2. The umpires were Will Lund, Joe Smith, William Nuttall, Ross Beattv and William E Pav. Cherey beat Gilliam, 6-0, 6-0. The games for todav ar Nettleton and Williams, at 1215; Wright and How-! sen, at 1.30; Jansen and an opponent, at 1 3', Jansen and Talmage, at 5 o'clock, the winner of this match to play Cheney at 5:30. In the consolation Smith Will play Jones, Groesbeck will take on How&on, Christensen will tackle Lund and Gilliam will play the loser of the Roherts-Tal-mage match. The matches In doubles will bo started Wednesday . The prizes for the tournament consist of The Tribune tennis trophy, emblematl-eal emblematl-eal of tbe Peseret championship, given by The Salt Lake Tribune, first prize in singles; a silver cup given by the Roes Jewelry company, second prize In singles; sin-gles; a pair of tennis trousers given by the Z. C. M. I., first prize in doubles, a pair of tennis shoes given by the Western Arms and a pair of gymnasium shoes given by Aueroach's; first prize consolation, consola-tion, a gold clock given by W, M. Mc-Conahay; Mc-Conahay; second prize consolation, a hat given by Gardner-Adams Co. |
