The rcfii-j rcfii-j dents of the southeastern portion of town . were greatly astonished early this morn- Ing by the appearance in their orchards (' of two bears. This is not a bear counts coun-ts try, and bears have never before been Been within twelve miles of the city, but j J last night an old bear and a cub actually j ( ventured down into the city. Many roa-I roa-I ions given for tho boars coming down town are all to the effect that the bears are compelled to come down Into the val-( val-( leys owing to tho extremely dry season, and this reason, along with the fragrant smell of ripe peaches, has undoubtedly Induced the mother and cub bear to make L for th Hlv I ' At a late hour last evening as Chrl3t Hoist went out to irrigate he held his I t lantern over the fence, preparatory to j climbing over, when something with the ( appearance of a dog came up to tho t lighted lantern and after giving a loud sniff made its get-away. Mr. Hoist knew at once what It was. Later on In the evening the .bear and cub entered tins orchard of Joseph Mortenscn, a hardware dealer In this city. Mr. Mortenscn, thlnk-j thlnk-j Ing stray cows had got Into the orchard, i hurried to round them up. Ho was greatly surprised to run right into the bear and cub. Having no gun In the house Mr Mortenscn telephoned tho police, po-lice, who arrived armed only with a pistol, j They succeeded in wounding the bear, l but not very seriously, for it still spent I the night In town. Early In the morning j the two bears followed a little boy down i the road who was driving a horse and buggy. From Fourth East and Fifth South the bear was driven to First East and north to Fourth South. It then took a cut off to Second East through a. block, i At this point it was met by Henry Tin- gey and a rifle and the result was that bruin's visit to Brlgham was abruptly v ended by a death blow from Mr. Tlngoy. j Tho bear measured about six foot as It lay on the ground. At a late hour today I the cub was still at largo, but of courso Is being hunted. |
