The closing exercises each year at the orphanage are one of the, unique and pleasing features of the gear's work. Ft is the one opportunity for the children to demonstrate what thoy havo profited by the kind teaching teach-ing nnd tender cure of the good sisters iu whoso charge they are. Ono of the interesting features of iho work of the children iu thu closing exorcises last night was the examination examina-tion in stenography. This examination demonstrated the 'practical side of tho lifo at St. Ann's. Tho result of tho examination proved the thorough mastery by the pupils of this brunch of commercial work us taught at tho orphanage. Tho Jvev. Father Brennan dictated a Jeltor to the class in stenography, which was taken down by the pupils in shorthand and transcribed on the typewriter. The letters as written by the pupils were read aloud by tho Rev. Father D. Kicly and distributed among the audience." The surprise ot the spectators at the excellence of tlio work done by the orphans was genuine. In Honor of Bishop. Tho closing exercises Wednesday night opened with a pretty chorus of welcome sung by tho orphans to tho Jit. Jtcv. Lnuren'cc Scunlan, bishop of Salt; Lake. Miss M. McCallum played tho accompaniment. Miss Kosella Harper Har-per then delivered n pleasing address to tho reverend bishop. An instrumental instrumen-tal trio was played by the Misses Mary McCallum, Mary Young and Iiosic O'Ncil. Tho little tots of the minim class then appeared in a pretty song and drill. "Little Patriots." 'Ten of the boys made a groat hit in the song, "Tho Mail Carriers." They were accompanied ac-companied by Marie McCallum. In the iive-ucf. drama. "The Child Heroine, Marie," the children showed to great advantago. "Within tho four walls of the cozy St. Ann's orphanage it was demonstrated that thero was real histrionic ability. Tho youngsters performed their parts in a manner that would be a credit to adults and made a pronounced hit with tho audience. Of tho clergy of tho diocosc of Salt Lako there wero present Bishop Scanlan Scan-lan and Iiov. Fathers Ivicly, Harris, Itynn, Rosier and Brennan. Medals Awarded. Tho Bishop Scanlan gold medal for excellence in catechism was awarded to Mary Giacomo. The medal for good conduct donated by tho Phelan estate was presented to Mary Young. A. Sorenson Sor-enson won tho medal donated bv Ifov. Father V. K. Ryan for general improvement. im-provement. Tho Knights ot Columbus modal for excellence in stenography and typewriting went to Cecelia whe-lan. whe-lan. The standing of six pupils for this medal was equal and it was necessary nec-essary to draw lots to determine thu winucr. Bishop Scanlan, who has always a warm place in his heart for tho or-phaus, or-phaus, made the elosiug remarks. He congratulated tho children for the excellent ex-cellent showing thoy had made iu their closing exercises' and thanked them for doing as he hoped thoy would do.
