Show SUICIDE AT BEAVER clerk J R wilkins of the second district blows ont his brains for about seventeen years james R wilkins has bad the position of clerk of the second district court at beaver andaas well known at that place and in other parts of the territory about five friday afternoon his friends in the immediate vicinity of his home at beaver were shocked to learn that he had committed suicide he had recently been superseded in office by a new clerk appointed by judge anderaon And ereon friday afternoon this clerk came to beaver and sir wilkins who had appeared to be in the best of spirits epi rits chatting with his cifa and two lady visitors said that he would go up town and see his successor As he went out of the door one of the ladies asked him what he was going to name his two months old baby he replied winifred and passed out of sight around the corner of the house he stood between two win dows so as to be unobserved by those in the room and taking a revolver from bis pocket put it to his head a little in front of and above the right ear and fired the bullet crashed through his brain and lodged in the other aide of his head he lived about ten minutes but never regained consciousness mr wilkins was naturally of a quiet disposition and such an act on his part was the last that was expected of him by his friend he was a native of ten bessee and was 48 years of age he served some time in the confederate army and came west after the war first going to california in 1883 he was appointed by president cleveland to be probate judge of beaver county but declined to qualify as be could not conduct the business of that office and the clerkship august 28 1888 five days less than a year before his death he married miss jennie mccoard of provo whom he leaves with a two months old to bear his loss it is understood that he was somewhat embarrassed embar assed financially and this with the loss of the clerkship is supposed to have been the reason for his rash action the remains were shipped to provo sunday morning and in the afternoon interred in the cemetery |
