Show they arc captured but succeed in slipping MOUNTED OFFICERS IN CLOSE PURSUIT FOR THEM particulars of arrest and their escape from justice three weeks have elapsed since the D II 11 j W passenger train was held up nar thompsons Thomp sons springs emery county and the relieved of many of valuables the railway company offered 1000 for the capture of the robbers and sheriff fowler deput v ranks and JOB bush went south pursuit sheriff FOR ler and deputy franks returned a few days ago leaving bush to follow up the trail the proceedings ce subsequent are detailed in the following communication which reached provo yesterday BLUFF san juan co utah august 17 the outlaws after robbing the train near thompson springs on the rio grande for the blue mountains in a direction at kock spring ten miles from moab they stole a pair of horses from a freighter leaving their ownard later left these and took two more horses at moab the officers tracked them to the blue mountains when their trail was lost there the officers got fresh animals and hired a couple of young men to scout around to find out which way the robbers had alne after a few days searching their camp was found in a deep rough canyon several men were hid up but as I 1 soon as their whereabouts was found out they split up and skipped out two of them one of the supposed robbers and a noted horse thief came to bluff called at the postoffice post office got their mail traded a little in the store and then left in a southerly direction aliey were gone but a short time when they returned and retraced their trail for about ten miles that night deputy J bush came in after them A party of ten whites and indians started next morning and followed their tracks about ten miles towards the blue mountains when they turned and retraced their tracks to bluff here the outfit got dinner fed their horses and started again on the trail deponty bush hired some nava joes and some utes to go with him and two other white men from bluff agreeing to pay the indiana provided they got their men when about sixty miles southwest south west of bluff on the navajo reservation the fugitives were overhauled and captured no one was hurt although the robbers at first offered resistance but seeing they were in the minority surrendered four of the horses they had have been identified as being stolen and the others no doubt are in the same position the paso neis were put in irons and started for salt lake city the people wire much elated at their capture as there are moie of such men m the country than are needed TUB ESCAPE BLUFF au 21 one mile below moab the thieves got away by jumping from the wagon into the brush one of them had got the chain off it was very dark and there was lots of brush and bod so it was hard to get on their track twenty men hunted that night and the next day their tracks were fauna head lag for the blue mountains they had taken off their boots and tied rags on their feet they would step on rocks brush etc to keep from making tracks deputy bush is still in pursuit and ihde to caich them |
