Show the worst expert history GREAT DAMAGE BY LIGHTNING manti and Epli raim sab merged m the deluge NEPHI aug 16 A terrific electria elec trie storm accompanied for an hour or two with considerable rain visited nephi this afternoon doing some damage and considerably frightening the inhabitants with a terrible discharge the electric fluid set fire to the deseret telegraph office in bead and bryans store but the flames were immediately extinguished about the only damage resulting being in a disarranged office and the complete severing of all tie t ie wire connections the flash on a local wire connected with the office visited the residence of E H sparks melting the wire in a similar manner and to papers on the table The residence of george atkin was struck by a bolt tearing a large hole in the roof and thence following the water pipe to mother earth wm henroid Henro Fd a boy of seventeen who was standing near by was paralyzed by the shock several other persons received heavy shocks but none serious so far as yet learned another says NEPHI aug 16 nephi has just passed through one of the hardest storms experienced in its history after a very hot day today a strong wind set in and blew for about twenty minutes at the end of which time a rain and thunderstorm came up some of the thunderbolts were so severe that they shook several buildings and one struck tho roof of aeed bryans store at the northeast corner setting the woodwork on fire the electricity followed the iron roof to the southwestern co mer and from there down the telegraph wire clear to the telegraph instruments almost completely ruining them and setting many papers on fire it also went down into the cellar igniting some wooden boxes but the goods were re mored before any great damage was done the storm was traveling in a southeasterly direction in its course it struck one wm E henroid a young man of eighteen years of age who now lies insensible from the effect A few moments later another bolt struck the residence of george atkin jr shattering the roof completely ely no further damage was done other than that mrs atkin who was in an upper room was badly frightened and is now quite ill in consequence utah aug 17 yesterday afternoon about 4 a rushing roaring sound was heard by the citizens of this place and before they had time to realize what it was a solid wall of about eight feet of water came tearing down the bed of the main creek bringing with it logs posts planks and huge stones which rumbled like distant thunder in about ten minutes the water began to lower and we thought the flood over when again that awful roar was heard and almost instantly a volume of water which flooded streets ans bridges came down huge log were tossed about as mere playthings the entire street between the main stores was a rushing river of mud the smell from the dirty mass was stifling the cellar of the coop co op store has about two and a half feet of mud in it several houses along the creek were flooded ruining carpets and furniture george snows establishment was considerably j damaged several cows are reported killed no people aug 16 A cloud in the east mountains this afternoon about 6 0 clock in coming down through the canyon it tore up all bridges and carried them along like straw A roaring sound was heard nearly fifteen minutes before it reached the town then the water came with great force spreading in all directions and filling up all over both streets and lots it tore down mans flume and filled a whole lot belonging to mr fasmussen Easm with three feet of mud no lives are reported lost as yet |
