The total output, moat of which came from Louisiana, was 309,111 Ions ton's, valued at $6,668,215, an Increase In-crease of 76,338 tons In (iviantlty and of ?1. 525,365 In value over the 1907 production. produc-tion. Both Imports and exports declined ,) slightly from 1907, and Imports amount ing to 21.136 tons, valued at $362,373. and t the exports to 27,894 tons, valued at $561,- 534. These figures Indicate that the country coun-try Is producing more than enough sulphur sul-phur to supply lis own needs, a condition which a few years ago would have been considered Impossible. In 1908 the production of pyrlte was 222,598 long tons, valued aL $857,113, a decrease in quantity but nn increase In ; value from the 1907 figures. Tho prln- : clpal producing states are Alabama, Cali fornia, Georgia, Massachusetts,' New I York and Virginia, The Imports greatly I. 'exceed the domestic supply, amounting In f 190S to 608,117 long tons, valued at $2.- ! 624,339. TIiIh material comes chlQflv from t Spain, Portugal, Canada and New'found- I. land. h The consumption of sulphur In the I ' United States, comprising the domestic I' production, tho imports, and the sulphur I content of the domestic and imported I pyrlte, wm 791,402 long tons in 1908, an It Increase of about 81,000 tons over that of j' 1907. Mr. Phalen's report contains notes on I ' tha producing localities and methods of I mining, with comparative statistics of the I ' industry since 1880. It can bo had free I from the director of tho Geological Sur- '. vey at Washington, D. C.
