Show e lamentable AFFAIR charles J provo commits suicide HE TAKES MORPHINE PILLS TO END HIS LIFE financial troubles and a deranged mind the cause the people in this city were shocked wednesday morning to learn of the fact that charley abbott of the ward had committed suicide the night previous in a salt lake hotel the story of the sad affair is as follows at about 11 ll tuesday mornine he walked into the office of the windsor hotel in first south street salt lake city and told mr white one of the boarde ra who happened to be stand the was not ft el ing well and wanted a bed as he must have rest tho clerk was not in so mr white showed a roo inand on the dav up abbott remarked that his head like a ball of firs he at once t bed and told mr white to call him at in the afternoon the clerk mr lemon returned shortly after this and u chambermaid told him of the circumstance and mr lemon went up to the room to see that all was right he found abbott in bed but not asleep and when asked if he wished to be put down for a call he replied ive got an antul head on lae ive been going it ever since sunday about he went up to call him he found him apparently adeep and attempted to wake him up but could not do so thinking that he might be in a stupor mr lemon got aonie cold water and calling mr white and some other boarders le turned to the room and bathed his head but were still unable to rouse him it was now evident that something serious was the matter and dr benedict was at once sent for the physician arrived at about and he soon found in abbotts vest pocket an empty box which had contained morphine pills and an examination showed that he was buffering from the effects of morphine poison the every effort to restore his patient to consciousness but he was tco far gone and as a last resort the physician left to get an electric battery but before he returned abbott was dead there was no person in the house who had avei seen abbott before but upon searching his pockets letters were found allowing who he was one of these letters biwer e signed mary and was evidently from his sister who resides at denver it urged him to send his wife to denver to spend the summer another letter was found addressed to bis wife and it explains bis motive for committing the rash act it reads as follows SALT LAKE CITY july sty dear haltie 1 feel that I 1 am going the same way as my brother and losing my mind I 1 can stand it no longar I 1 am not responsible for my act I 1 have no control over myself for the past week I 1 have been as one dead 1 knew it mast come my head ic now fall of fire forget me is the beat for all kiss the dear little one and take good care ef her dear remember ahe name I 1 told you tell papa abbotte Ab botta write and forget that you ever knew debut do what you can for the little one yours this letter was at once taking by mr heart one of the boarders to the address given and delivered to mrs ab bolt she did not seem to realize the situation fully but started at once for I 1 the hotel accompanied by a neighbor in the meantime the coroner had been notified of the affair and just as mrs abbott reached the hotel the under I 1 takers amen the inquest over the body was held at sexton taylora Tay iora undertaking establishment wednesday morning dr H J faust joseph A benninga Jen ninga and P T were summoned as jurors and a number of witnesses were examined but gothing important in addition to the facts already reported was dietel dieted HC with whom the deceased was associated in the job printing business made a statement of facts mr lamon frank hurst and mr white of the windsor made statements to the effect that the deceased came to the hotel on tuesday morning e a room and was found in the afternoon in abbott to hibb
