Show LITY COUNCIL the business transacted at last nj gats session the city council met in special session last night with mayor dusenberry in the chair tho absentees were councillors councilors Counci lors daniels bean and after the reading of alie minutes of the previous meeting which occupied one fourth of last nights session the business of the meeting was considered the petition of andrew eggertsen and twenty seven others asking abo appointment of alex as city marshal was laid on the table petition of ike fordonski representing that while he was in business in provo as retail liquor dealer that he kept an orderly house and with the exception of one offense ofie nse hai not violated any provision of the liquore ordinance and askine the refunding of the 40 assessed against him as a fine for said read alderman A D holdaway Hol dawa motioned that the petition be not granted councilor maiben was in favor of a part of the agne being refunded as he deemed mr fordonski had certainly not been entirely responsible for the of tense for which the fine was assessed alderman holdaway did not in letting down the bars in this matter if the council did BO it would be flooded with similar petitions at every session he did not believe in condoning their ouen ses he would rather condone the offense of a man getting drunk the council had no right to refund the money that power rested entirely with the mayor alderman scott considered that mr fordonski neki had kept a first class house while he was selling liquor in provo and in view of these circumstances he did not feel to be hard in the matter although at the aade time he was in favor of the ordinance being strictly enforced alderman alexander felt that a man who violated the law should pay the penalty the council had no authority to license of fenaes he would oppose the granting of the petition the petition was not granted mr annett manager of the rocky mountain bell telephone co was present and stated that the company he represented was delirious desi rious of the provo city council passing an ordinance granting them the right of way through the streets of provo of erecting their poles the report of city recorder for license collected during the month lead and placed on file it shows a total amoun collected of the claim of W H brown for services as master for the year 1888 amounting to 25 was on motion of alderman holdaway referred to the committee on irrigation the claim of E L alien for bedding and carpeting ordered burned by the quarantine physician amounting to was referred to the committee on quarantine the claim of H M for quarantine services nursing the smallpox small pox patients and cleaning and infecting disinfecting dis amounting to was re berred to the same committee the claim of coop co op for sup plies furnished quarantine physician for the pox patients amounting to 2850 went tha same way the application of R 8 hines for renewal of his license as retail liquor dealer for three months was granted on motion of alderman holdaway the resolution granting a franchise to the provo city electric light and power company was taken up on its third reading alderman brown moved postponement of its further consideration the resolution setting apart the old adobe yard as the garden city park was then taken up on motion of A D holdaway reading of the bill was postponed when on its third reading considerable talk was here engaged in in relation to a just remuneration for the mayor the members of the council seeming to think that the public officers should be paid on motion of alderman scott one thousand dollars was appropriated on the east drain on motion of alderman holdaway the sum of 20 was appropriated to the city surveyor for work done on the east drain council alien adjourned till monday next at 8 p m |
