Show A baring and well planned jot HOW THE ROBBER SECURED it was a desperate move and colo march 29 tho boldest and most successful bank robbery ever reported in the west was perpetrated upon the first national bank nt 2 this afternoon by which the robber succeeded in getting away with the cashier of the bank in an interview with an associated press agent a few minutes after the robbery gave the following account of the affair yesterday morning immediately after the opening of the bank a wall dressed man with light moustache and complexion and of medium height walked into the bank and asked assistant cashier boss lewin where he could see mr moffatt the prebi dont of the bank boss lewin informed him that he could see mr moffatt who is also president of the denver eio grande railway at the presidents in tho cheesman block nothing more was seen or heard till this morning about 10 when he entered the railway office and asked to see mr moffatt on important business he was admitted to his private room and briefly stated that he had discovered a conspiracy whereby the I 1 arst national was to be robbed of a largo amount of money mr moffatt told the man he was very luy lu y at that moment but he would bai pit abed to meet him abc his private office at the bank at 1 with this the mua left the building A fuw minutes appointed he called at the bank and was shown into the presidents office while remaining standing he inquired it cashier S N wood was in and was told that he was at inich he then asked for a blank check for the purpose of showing how the robbery was to be perpetrated the check was handed to him he laid ir upon tho desk in front of and wid t will have to do this myself and pulling a largo revolver from his coat placed it at head and in a decidedly earnest but unexcited manner said ll 11 want and am going to have it I 1 have considered this matter and the chances I 1 am running and the consequences ita fail and am arrested I 1 am penniless and a desperate man and have been driven during the past week to that point 1 have considered suicide as the only means of escape from the poverty and misery in which I 1 exist you have millions and I 1 am determined to havo what I 1 have asked for or your life if you make a noise or call a man or ring a bell I 1 will blow your brains out and then blow up the building and myself with this bottle of etro glycerine which he at that moment pulled out of another pocket now take your choice moffatt started to argue with the man but was stopped with the information that it was useless and that he had but two minutes in which to fill out the check before him for if he desired to live moffatt seeing no other alternative filled out the check and was then ordered to take it to the paying teller and get it cashed mr moffatt left his office and with the man behind him with the revolver partially concealed under his overcoat and wit h the muzzle almost against back marched him behind the counter and up to paying teller keeley wilh a request that it be immediately cashed they then re marched into office without attracting the attention of one of the fifteen or twenty clerks who were ansy at work within two feet of where they passed after they had remained in the private office three or four minutes the robber informed mr moffatt that they were wasting time and that he had better step to tho door and motion his teller to come to him which he did bof fauct instructed him to bring the mon ey into his office and as the teller turned to go away the robber told him he wanted twenty bills and a thousand in gold tho money was brought in and handed over to the gentleman who for a few brief moments had owned the bank and waiting until the teller had reached his deak he backed out to the front door making mr moffatt remain standing in his door until ho had reached the curbstone he then raised his hat and walked around ohp corner and has not yet been heard of mr aofia t is completely prostrated with the shock detectives are after the man but have no trace of him the man who committed the robbery at the first national bank this afternoon introduced himself to moffatt as 0 J wells the camp night and cheo questioned upon the case said they could say nothing as they knew nothing at all about it until a after fter mr Moffat fc gave the alarm after taft robber had ried they both saw a man walk behind the counter with mr moffatt but nothing in the appearance of the man nor his actions appeared strange nor particularly attracted their attention consequently they thought nothing of it march 30 W a dark the man arrested last evening on suspicion as bing the man who robbed the first national bank of and subsequently released after D H moffatt failed to identify him was rearrested and held to await further developments on the charge of being an accomplice he positively denies any connection with the affair detectives while searching a building in the vicinity of the bank today to day discovered in the hallway leading to the hallinger printing office a light brown overcoat in the pocket of which was a loaded revolver and a bottle supposed to contain nitroglycerine nitro glycerine which evidently had been thrown there by the as he passed through the building in making chiy escape the find way taken to the police headquarters and the bottle and contents sent to a
