Show A OIIURCH ORGAN CONTRAST. Tho local men ou tho Deseret Nows aro evidently ashamed of tho editorial pago of that paper. Tho editor 011 Friday Fri-day evening, in his exceedingly grumpy leader, whined at tho coining of the Grand Army' National encampment to this city next 3'ear, and intimated that it and thoso it represented would do nothing toward tho wclcomo and onlcr-tninmont onlcr-tninmont of tho veterans of tho great Civil War, unless The Tribuuo could bo gagged. And all the time wc aro merely mere-ly giving "the law and tho testimony," and quoting with nbsoluto accuracy, (giving tho exact book and page of tho church-printed official works,) tho inspired words of tho church's prophets, seors. and revelators! And so wc will continue to do right along. Wo also point the finger of scorn at'tho church organ, which is so desperately ashamed of tho inspired words of its own sect's prophets, seers, and revelators reve-lators that it is distressed be3'ond nicas-i nicas-i uro to sco them reproduced. In that sumo leading editorial, (which wc reproduced in full on Salur-day Salur-day morning,) tho church organ affected affect-ed to bo concerned becauso tho city is not growing fast enough. It claimed that but for the "insane agitation," this city would bo getting forward faster than it Is. "Thero is no reason why this city should not now havo 200,-000 200,-000 inhabitants instead of perhaps S0,-000," S0,-000," said tho News editor. And that idiotic lino of argument is put forth by tho church organ, in the faco of tho fact that never iu this city's hisloo' hns the city grown as it has sinco tho American parly victor in 1005. Prior to that time, there was no complaint com-plaint from tho News. Tho rate of growth was and had been entirely satisfactory sat-isfactory to it. though thero was iu the last year of the Morris administration an undoubted backset to tho city's growth, and no ono could fairly csli-' mate the cit3''s population at above about G0.000. Tho tremendously vital advancement of tho city in tho less than three years of American control is admitted b3' tho church organ to havo increased tho 60,000 to 80,000; and tho News claims tho increase should have been to 200,000 iu tho period pe-riod from November, lfJOu,' to Scplem-' bcr, H90S. This, however, is an expression expres-sion of greater confidence 13' the church organ in tho stimulating vir.tuo of American administration than wc have seen expressed anywhere else, and bc-trays bc-trays tho real mind of tho News editor iu its confidence in the benefits of Americanism better than tho absurd detraction which ho undertakes to frame. That his opinion is not shared b3' the live and active men on his local force; that thoso aro enthusiastic on the growth of the city in tho unprecedented fashion in which it is now growing, is evident from the boost article which we reproduce on this page from tho Doserct Nows of Saturday evening last. This local boost tolls of actual conditions; tho editor told of chimeras, and gave vent to distorted and disordered imaginings. imag-inings. The live local men speak iu admiration of l he vast, the now, the up.-to-dalo progrossiveness of the city, and refer .scornfully to "whnt remains of the old village," in contrast with tho new forms of construction. Wo reproduced the grump leader u( Friday evening's News in Saturday morning's Tribune.. Wu now supplement, supple-ment, that republication with the News's local boost on tho third pago of this morning's Tribune, aud invito tho public's attention atten-tion to tho contrast. It ver3' fairly illustrates il-lustrates by comparison tho differonco between a fair local statement of what actually exists, aud the hide-bound fun' cies of a chiulcrical bigot, who fools bound to make out a case for his dry rot. bigotry, despito fact and conditions that eve'ry 0110 cau see all around him in activity, progress, and push. |
