Springhill college, one of tho oldest Jesuit colleges in the southern states, and well known In the United States and Europe, was destroyed by fire today. There was no loss of life. The college, standing on a high plateau seventy miles from the city, could not bo ranched by tho city fireman jn time. Tho lire started In the chapel and It Is thought to have been caused by crossed wires from a moving picture machine. The 325 students were at morning service. ser-vice. They filed quietly out of tho chap;l and then l hey fought the flames under the guidance of the teachers under command of Rev. Father X. Twellmeyer. president of the Institution. The following buildings build-ings were destroyed: College chapel, exhibition hall, music room, college library, college museum, two dormitories, junior study, junior gymnasium gymna-sium nnd junior library. Among the contents of the building, especially es-pecially the museum, were many priceless relics and valuable specimen?. |
