CLEARS UP LOCAL SMELTING SITUATION Plenty of Competition Now for the Producer of Precious Metals. It was learned Friday morning that the United States Smelting, Rofining Ss Mining company had sent out notices to the mining companies with which it has oro contracts informing them that this organization is rww ready for tho rccoipt of ores. Tho significance of this stop needs no emphasizing in local circles, a3 it marks a new epoch in tho mining and smelting history of this State. Tho United Slates company was a do-fondant do-fondant ovor two years ago in the famous Bmoltor smoke cases brought by tho Salt Lako vallev farmers, who sot forth that tho smelters woro ruining their farms and endangering tho lives of their families and stock b3' tho fumes that were emitted from tho smelter stacks. A permanont injunction was asked for and rcccivod against the United Uni-ted St3tcs, tho Utah Connsolidatcd, tho Bingham Consolidated and tho American Ameri-can Smelting Si Refining companies. Tho latter organization mado its aco with the farmers, securing a modified decree b- which it was permitted to operato its Murray plant under certain restrictions. The Bingham Consolidated company closed their smelter, and ro-tircd ro-tircd from the field. The United States company put its metallurgical experts at work on the problom of doing awa3T with the noxious noxi-ous fumes, and they succcoded after a 3'ear's effort in finding a wa3' to extract ex-tract from tho smoko and fumes all substances iniuious to surrounding vegetation ana animal life. This was a tremendous step in advanco in tho scienco of smelting ores, and the com-pan3' com-pan3' met with no difficulty in securing secur-ing a modified decree from tho courts, allowing tho compau to operate uuder these now conditions. i With tho Uuited States smeltor in : operation, which will be within a vory short time now, Utah producers will i havo araplo markets and competition for their pres. Tho United States and , tho American companies will be treating treat-ing lead-silver ores in their old valley plants; the American plant at Garfield will be treating copper ores, whilo the Tintic and Oguen smelters will be adding add-ing thoir important part toward tho general prosperity of the mines.
